Objectives and challenges

Kreuzbund is the largest mutual help association in Germany for addicted people and their relatives and currently comprises some  1,400 groups. Members and voluntary helpers support addicts in their search for a life free of addiction, and provide them with information on treatment and possible therapies. Kreuzbund is an important link within the system of help for addicts. Cooperation with specialist clinics and advice bureaus naturally exists as well. Addicted people and their relatives receive individual assistance, increasing the chance for them to achieve an addiction-free life and re-integration into their families, job and society in general.

Within the German health and social welfare system, Kreuzbund represents its members’ interests and carries out intensive public relations work to make the public at large aware of the problems associated to addiction. It also supports measures aimed at prevention and seeks to implement political initiatives for addicts. The consequences of the misuse of addictive substances are often underestimated, and Kreuzbund considers it essential to keep the public informed on this subject and the problems of addiction. The public needs to become more aware of responsible attitudes in the use of such substances.

Volunteers form the basis of Kreuzbund. Some 3,500 members have various voluntary functions within the organization, within the groups, at city or executive committee level. Each year they donate more than 300,000 hours of voluntary work. The volunteers themselves receive advanced training courses to assist them in their work, and professionals work closely with them both within the Kreuzbund association and in other addiction aid organizations
